SIBU, July 13: The saying ‘when there is a will, there is a way’ holds true for blind student Imenwell Isak after he achieved outstanding results in his 2022 STPM exam by scoring a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.50.
Both Imenwell and his father, Isak Ngau, 46, are blind. Isak is the chairman of the Sarawak Society for the Blind.
Imenwell’s mother, Christina Nyohen, 45, has normal eyesight.
“I lost my eyesight to glaucoma when I was 16. If I had sought medical treatment earlier then, I would not have become a blind person,” Imenwell told reporters today after receiving recognition from State Education director Datuk Dr Azhar Ahmad today at SMK Sacred Heart Sibu.
The other recipient for the special education category was Sia Hui Xin of the same school.
Despite his handicap as a person with disability, Imenwell of SMK Matang Jaya, Kuching said that he had proved to himself that one can achieve greater heights with a strong will and determination.
A football enthusiast, Imenwell’s ambition is to become an educator. He will be applying to further his studies at Universiti Malaya, as he said it has the best facility for disabled persons.
Asked how he managed to do well in his studies, Imenwell replied that it was due to his father’s serious effort.
“He spent several thousand ringgit in buying a special digital device for blind persons like me to read and write. I usually spend about two hours revising every day,” he added.
He also expressed his appreciation to his teachers for his accomplishment.
“I would like to express my deepest appreciation to the teachers at my school for their sacrifices while teaching and educating us throughout this STPM preparation,” he added. — DayakDaily
