KOTA SAMARAHAN, Dec 6: A 68-year-old visually impaired mother in Kampung Telok Sabang, Kota Samarahan, had to crawl several hundred meters to reach help after her 48-year-old daughter passed away at home days earlier.
Kota Samarahan district police chief Supt Damataries Lautin said the mother told authorities her daughter had complained of chest pain and difficulty breathing on Nov 30. Despite her attempts to assist, she soon realised her daughter had already died.
“The mother, who is blind, was unable to call for help immediately due to her disability and the remote location of their house, which is accessible only by a narrow footpath. She remained at the house for several days before attempting to seek help,” Supt Damataries said in a statement.
On Dec 4, Jariyah mustered her strength and crawled over rough terrain to reach the main road, where she was spotted the next morning by a passerby who immediately alerted authorities.
A forensic examination at Sarawak General Hospital determined the cause of death was a heart attack caused by complete blockage of all three major coronary arteries. No arrests were made, and police classified the case as a natural death.
The incident has highlighted the challenges faced by individuals living with disabilities, particularly when family members are unwell and immediate help is not available. – DayakDaily
