KUCHING, Aug 7: A fire that started in several containers converted into temporary workers’ quarters spread to the rear structure of a warehouse at Muara Tabuan Light Industrial Park in Lorong Setia Raja this morning.
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) from Tabuan Jaya, Padungan, and Batu Lintang stations responded to the emergency at 10.48am, deploying six senior officers and 37 firefighters to the scene.
Upon arrival, Bomba personnel reported that the fire involved two structures. The connecting rear section of the warehouse, measuring 100 by 100 square feet, was 70 per cent destroyed.
Firefighting operations were carried out on both sides of the warehouse, with a firebreak established at the rear of the factory to prevent further spread.
Bomba stated that efforts were hampered by limited access due to the warehouse’s zinc walls, which reached the height of a two-storey building.
Despite the challenges, firefighters successfully contained the blaze and prevented it from spreading to four adjacent factory units by 12.19pm.
As of 7pm, personnel were still conducting overhaul operations to extinguish smouldering piles of goods beneath the collapsed section of the warehouse.
Bomba added that the warehouse owner will assist by providing a bulldozer to help with the ongoing firefighting and clearance efforts. — DayakDaily
