KUCHING, Dec 10: The third-floor control room of a silicon ferroalloy processing plant along Jalan Persisir Bintulu-Miri was destroyed in a fire this afternoon, with flames consuming the entire 60-by-40-metre facility.
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Samalaju station received the emergency call at 12.22pm and deployed a team to the site, located about 4km from the station.
The first engine arrived at 12.25pm to find the control room on the third floor already fully engulfed.
Operations Commander PBK II Clarence, together with Senior Operations Commander PPgB Tc Irwin Abidin, carried out an initial size-up before instructing firefighters to attack the blaze using a single 300-foot hose line connected to a pressurised hydrant.
The fire was brought under control at 1.04pm, but the control room, part of the plant’s silicon ferroalloy processing section had been completely destroyed.
No casualties were reported. After ensuring the area was safe, the Samalaju team concluded the operation at 2pm and returned to the station. — DayakDaily
