Bintulu ‘sick’ housing project finally revived after seven-year delay, first homes handed over

KUCHING, Aug 19: A ‘sick’ housing development project in Bintulu, stalled for seven years since its original completion date in Dec 2017, has finally been revived with the first batch of homes handed over to purchasers.

The Ministry of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Sarawak (MPHLG) said in a press statement that the project at Lot 6256 and Lot 6258, Block 32, Kemena Land District, developed by Tiara Seni Sdn Bhd, had left about 75 house buyers in limbo for years due to severe delays.

The development comprises 16 units of three-storey zero boundary detached houses, 24 units of double-storey semi-detached houses, 70 units of double-storey terrace houses, 46 units of double-storey low-cost terrace houses, and 64 units of two- to three-storey townhouses.

“In view of the prolonged delay, MPHLG has been carrying out continuous monitoring and engagement with all relevant stakeholders, including the Sewerage Services Department, Land and Survey Department, Bintulu Development Authority, the developer, as well as house purchasers.

“Through the Jawatankuasa Teknikal Pemantauan Projek Perumahan (JKTP) meeting held on Oct 17, 2024, and subsequent follow-up engagements, the Ministry successfully facilitated the resolution of technical compliance issues that had hindered the developer’s progress.

“These concerted efforts enabled the developer to secure the OP in stages, thereby allowing the handing over of vacant possession to the respective owners,” the statement read.

The first batch of OP was issued on July 14, 2025, covering 38 double-storey terrace and double-storey semi-detached units, while the second batch was issued on Aug 6, 2025, for 46 double-storey terrace units. Several of these have since been handed over to the respective purchasers.

The ministry said the remaining units are still under rectification, while construction of the townhouse units is ongoing and will continue to be closely monitored.

“This positive development reflects the effectiveness of the task force (or JKTP) as a dedicated platform to deliberate on issues, obtain technical input from relevant agencies, and formulate collaborative solutions to expedite housing project delivery,” it said.

Reaffirming its commitment to protecting house purchasers’ interests, the ministry pledged to intensify efforts to resolve problematic housing projects and ensure that purchasers are able to finally enjoy a place of shelter, safety, and comfort. — DayakDaily
