KUCHING, July 31: The biodiesel blending depot facility in Bintulu, Sarawak will be upgraded alongside those in Sandakan and Lahad Datu, Sabah to support Malaysia’s transition to low-carbon alternative fuels.
Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim said carbon trading will be facilitated through the implementation of the National Carbon Market Policy, the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), and incentives for carbon credit projects.
“The green economy, an economic development model that prioritises environmental sustainability, will be strengthened through various initiatives under RMK13,” he said during the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) in Parliament today.
Anwar also revealed that the construction of waste-to-energy plants will be expanded through private sector collaboration to reduce reliance on landfills, while agricultural waste will be optimised to drive the circular economy and create new sustainable value-added products.
“A pilot carbon capture project in the iron and steel industry will be implemented in Kemaman, Terengganu.
“Access to green financing will be expanded to support decarbonisation efforts in key national sectors.
“The Malaysian Aviation Sector Decarbonisation Roadmap will be implemented. This plan outlines the development of infrastructure and the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF),” he added.
The Prime Minister further stressed that, in line with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), battery energy storage systems (BESS), smart grids, and electricity interconnection projects from Sarawak to Peninsular Malaysia will facilitate more efficient integration of renewable energy across regions.
“Additionally, hybrid hydro-floating solar initiatives and the green hydrogen hub in Kenyir will be expanded as models of integrated green energy. The government is also considering nuclear energy as a competitive and safe clean energy source.
“At the same time, the government will strengthen the security of existing energy supplies through the construction of the Third Regasification Terminal Complex in Lumut, Perak (LuMIC).
“The government is also committed to accelerating the development of the rare earth elements (REE) industry in collaboration with state governments to enhance the ecosystem and promote activities along the value chain. Emphasis is placed on developing local capacity in mining, refining, and separation technologies through strategic international partnerships.”
Anwar also highlighted that REE resources will be prioritised for domestic use to develop midstream and downstream industries.
“These efforts will be supported by talent development, modern infrastructure, comprehensive incentives, and more accurate resource mapping,” he said. — DayakDaily
