BINTANGOR, July 11: They may look cute, but these hairy critters are a major nuisance and can cause itching if they make skin contact.

Thousands of caterpillars reportedly infested a number of houses in Bintangor, yesterday.

Worried over their personal safety, residents contacted firefighters help to get rid of the unwanted guests.

According to Bintangor fire station chief PPgB Nicholas Belulin, the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) received the first call at 6.57pm and despatched a team led by PBK II Mohd Khairul Adeni Bahgia to Kampung Gelam at Jalan Abang Ali.

“They found three houses located next to each other, infested by thousands of hairy caterpillars. We used a mixture of insecticides to spray them,” Nicholas said.

Four hours later, at 10.44pm, they received another call over a similar infestation, this time involving a house at another village at Jalan Abang Amin.

A second team led by PBK II Hilary Pitre Ambit and two others took about 15 minutes to get rid of the insects. — DayakDaily
