KUCHING, Oct 23: Brewspark Technologies Group has been recognised with the Corporate Meetings and Corporate Incentives (CSR) Champion Award at the Borneo Inspires Legacy Awards (BILA) 2025 for its innovative Spogomi Malaysia initiative: a movement that began with turning litter collection into a national sport for a cleaner, prouder Malaysia.

For Brewspark Technologies Group, the accolade is more than a recognition of corporate responsibility; it’s a validation of a sustainability vision rooted in action, innovation, and collaboration.

“True change happens when organisations get involved, not just donate,” said Lord Dr Kazuki Foo Ming Wei, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Brewspark Technologies Group.

“Spogomi proves that protecting the planet can be fun, active, and something the next generation can be proud of.”

Originating in Japan in 2008 through The Nippon Foundation, Spogomi, a blend of the words sport and gomi (Japanese for “trash”), encourages participants to clean their communities in a competitive yet educational way. Teams collect and sort waste within a set time limit, scoring points for proper segregation and total weight collected.

When Spogomi was first introduced to Malaysia in 2023, few could have predicted how quickly it would grow. What began as a modest pilot in one city has since evolved into a nationwide movement, engaging 135 teams across eight regional events in 2025. Altogether, Spogomi Malaysia participants collected and sorted over 1,027kg of waste, with a record 540kg processed in a single one-hour finale.

Brewspark’s approach to Spogomi Malaysia goes beyond the typical CSR framework. The company collaborated with local councils to develop waste segregation heatmaps, using real-time data to help identify waste hotspots and tailor their recycling and waste management strategies more effectively.

Partnerships with the Centre for Marine Research Studies further elevated the initiative by leveraging scientific expertise to interpret the data and propose actionable insights, turning a regular clean-up into an ongoing, evidence-based sustainability effort.

“Each city had its own systems and priorities. Getting everyone aligned to a single sustainability vision required patience, flexibility, and a lot of communication,” said Foo.

Today, Spogomi Malaysia has become more than a corporate initiative; it’s a catalyst for national environmental pride. Schools have begun integrating Spogomi principles into their co-curricular programmes, while local authorities are exploring permanent adaptations for ongoing community engagement.

By connecting action, education, and collaboration, Brewspark Technologies Group exemplifies what it means to create a living legacy; one that empowers citizens, strengthens partnerships, and aligns with Malaysia’s broader sustainability goals.

The inaugural BILA, hosted in Kuching on October 3, 2025, was created to celebrate changemakers whose dedication to community impact often goes unseen. The awards aim to bridge the gap between grassroots leadership and corporate engagement, spotlighting individuals and organisations that drive sustainable transformation across Borneo and beyond.

Their recognition at BILA isn’t just about an achievement, but a stand that sustainability is most powerful when it’s shared.

“Change begins the moment you choose to act,” Foo said. “No effort is ever too small when it’s driven by purpose and heart.” —DayakDaily
