KUCHING, Nov 19: The Public Works Department (JKR) Malaysia has activated its Disaster Operations Room, BiGBen, to monitor high-risk areas, particularly during heavy rainfall that could trigger flooding, road disruptions, or landslides.
BiGBen acts as a central hub, coordinating real-time disaster information and issuing timely alerts to safeguard public safety.
Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the activation of BiGBen underscores JKR Malaysia’s commitment to maintaining optimal disaster preparedness throughout the Northeast Monsoon season.
“Through BiGBen and the eBencana system, we can monitor road conditions and coordinate disaster information, including road closures and alternative routes, in real-time, enabling faster responses and early warnings to the public,” he said in a social media post today.
This followed the Ministry welcoming members of the Special Select Committee on Infrastructure, Transport and Communications, the Friends of Ministry – Ministry of Public Works (FOM–KKR), and the All Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia (APPGM) – Disaster Risk Management to observe BiGBen’s operations in Putrajaya.
The visit allowed participants to gain a deeper understanding of the centre’s work and share critical information with residents in their constituencies.
“The knowledge gained from BiGBen enables MPs and committee members to issue early warnings, reduce safety risks, and help communities prepare for potential disasters,” he added.
Nanta also commended the dedication of JKR and KKR teams, who operate around the clock to ensure the nation’s road network remains safe and functional even under extreme weather conditions.
He thanked the visiting committees for prioritising public welfare despite their busy schedules, emphasising that such collaboration is essential to the success of ministry projects and the timely delivery of their benefits to the people. — DayakDaily
