KUCHING, Nov 3: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has warned the public to remain vigilant against increasingly sophisticated scams after an individual close to him was allegedly targeted by scammers using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to imitate his voice.
In a statement today, Wee said the scammer had contacted the individual by telephone, impersonated him and requested a loan before instructing the victim to transfer RM10,000 into an unfamiliar third-party bank account.
He stressed that he was not the person who made the call and had lodged a police report over the incident.
“I would like to state clearly that the call was not made by me. I have lodged a police report regarding this matter and strongly condemn such fraudulent activities,” he said.
Wee said the incident highlighted how advances in AI technology had made scam tactics increasingly sophisticated, with criminals potentially exploiting voice imitation to deceive victims into believing they were communicating with someone they knew and trusted.
“I urge everyone to remain vigilant. If you receive any request involving loans, money transfers, or financial transactions, please do not rely solely on a familiar voice.
“Always verify the caller’s identity through other means before taking any action,” he reminded.
Wee also called on anyone who encountered suspicious calls or messages to report them to the authorities immediately. — DayakDaily
