KUCHING, March 15: The two main road upgrade projects in Betong are expected to be completed within 18 months, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas says.
He stressed that to ensure the project runs on schedule, Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) has introduced a new measure where contractors who fail to meet the progress targets within 30 days might have their contracts terminated.
“Previously, the given period was 100 days, but it has now been shortened to 30 days to ensure the project does not get delayed.
“Contractors are also required to commence work on-site within 30 days after the project is handed over to them,” he was quoted as saying in a news report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) after officiating the groundbreaking ceremony for the Jalan Spaoh Spur upgrading project today.
He emphasised that this policy was not meant to burden contractors, but to ensure that every approved infrastructure project could be completed on schedule and benefit the people.
Two projects to upgrade the main road in Betong have officially commenced following the groundbreaking ceremony organised by JKR Sarawak.
The projects involved are Jalan Mara/Jalan Selangking/Nanga Sela in Tanjung Paoh as well as Jalan Spaoh Spur, which are expected to be completed within 18 months.
The Jalan Mara/Jalan Selangking/Nanga Sela in Tanjung Paoh are expected to be upgraded from a 10-kilometre gravel and concrete road to an asphalt road with an allocation of RM16 million, while the Jalan Spaoh Spur project involves the upgrading of the existing 10.5-kilometre road to JKR R3 standards at a cost of RM20.4 million.
Also present at the event were Betong MP Dato Dr Richard Rapu, Betong Division Resident Richard Michael Abunawas, JKR Sarawak director Dr Cassidy Morris, and JKR Betong Division engineer Jason Ng. – DayakDaily
