KUCHING, March 12: Construction of the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching 2 (BCCK 2) is progressing ahead of schedule and could be completed earlier than its March 2028 deadline, with measures in place to ensure external geopolitical factors do not disrupt the project’s timeline.
Deputy Premier, who is also Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD), Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, said he was satisfied with the progress following a visit to the construction site on Wednesday (March 11).
“We are happy with their progress,” he said after receiving a briefing from the contractor on the project’s development and procurement plans.
In a statement today, Uggah said contractor’s presentation showed a strong commitment to strengthening their construction capacity, with current progress indicating the project could be completed earlier than the scheduled due date.
The meeting was also held to review the procurement strategy and sources of materials, some of which are imported from countries including China.
“The briefing was particularly important in light of the potential impact of the ongoing geopolitical uncertainties, including tensions linked to the Middle East, to ensure that such external factors will not affect the project’s progress or timeline,” he added.
The BCCK 2 project is a strategic initiative by the Sarawak government to strengthen the State’s position as a leading hub for conventions and international events in the region.
Once completed, BCCK 2 is expected to accommodate up to 9,500 delegates, significantly expanding Sarawak’s capacity to host large-scale conferences, exhibitions, and international gatherings.
The new facility will complement the existing facilities at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching, further supporting the State’s growing business events industry.
Also present during the visit were Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Development Datuk Ir Aidel Lariwoo, permanent secretary to MIPD Datu Chiew Chee Yaw, Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawal deputy director (Technical Services) Ts Meehan Jorai and Cahya Mata Sarawak Berhad head of Property Development Strategic Business Unit Shaun Mok. — DayakDaily
