The sentence was handed down by the Sessions Court today.

Akmal Najmuddin Jeperidin, 32, and Horyezad Hosen, 24, pleaded guilty to a joint charge framed under Section 395 of the Penal Code, together with Section 397, before Judge Noorhisham Mohd Jaafar.

The law provides for up to 20 years in prison and whipping, with mandatory caning if a weapon is used during the crime.

The judge ordered their sentences to commence from the dates of their arrests.

The robbery occurred around 2pm on August 9 at a residence along Jalan Taiton, Bau.

Case facts revealed that the duo, one wielding a machete, restrained a 69-year-old man, his wife, their son and granddaughter by taping their wrists and mouths.

They then forced the homeowner into his bedroom and demanded he open a safe. When he refused, one of the robbers kicked him around the waist.

The other eventually found the safe key, unlocked it, and took an estimated RM100,000 in cash.

The pair also fled with two gold necklaces, a gold ring, the victim’s wallet containing his identification card, ATM cards, driving licences, motorcycle road tax, RM800 in cash, and two mobile phones.

A police report lodged by a member of the household led to Akmal’s arrest on November 7 and Horyezad’s five days later.

Investigators later confirmed both men were responsible for the break-in and had disposed of the stolen properties. — DayakDaily
