MIRI, Jan 11: The much-anticipated Batu Niah Market has officially opened its doors, marking a significant milestone for the local community and the region’s tourism industry.

The launch ceremony today was officiated by Bekenu assemblywoman Datuk Rosey Yunus.

In her opening speech, Rosey highlighted the market’s potential to enhance Niah’s appeal as a tourism hub, particularly with the nearby Niah Caves – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – serving as a major draw for visitors.

“This project is not just about creating a physical space; it’s about providing opportunities for the local community to grow and thrive,” Rosey said.

“The market will contribute significantly to the socio-economic development of the area, benefiting both traders and residents,” she added.

The new two-storey market is equipped with modern amenities, including water and electricity supply, spacious stalls, and facilities designed for both vendors and visitors.

Although some parts of the building, such as the upstairs sections, are still in the process of being allocated to selected traders, the ground floor has been bustling with activity since Dec 18, last year.

Vendors offer a colourful array of fresh produce, including vegetables and fruits unique to Sarawak, meeting the daily needs of local residents and curious tourists alike.

The establishment of the market coincides with Niah National Park’s designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is expected to attract an influx of visitors to the Subis district.

Local authorities called on the community to maintain the market’s infrastructure and cleanliness to ensure its status as a key attraction.

The market’s development, initially proposed as a 15-month project starting in January 2021, faced several delays due to the Movement Control Order (MCO), weather conditions, and funding challenges.

Originally budgeted under two separate financial allocations; RMK10 (RM2 million) and the Special RTP 2015 (RM1.8 million), the project ultimately relied on a consolidated budget of RM2.8 million, with an additional RM1.8 million sourced later to cover the full cost of RM4.6 million.

The market includes 54 dry market stalls, 10 fishmonger stalls, six butcher stalls, and nine food and drink outlets.

Seating areas on the upper floor can accommodate up to 140 people, alongside public amenities such as parking and restrooms.

The market was handed over to the appointed contractor on Jan 6, 2021, and after several approved extensions, it was completed on Nov 2024. — DayakDaily
