KUCHING, May 21: Batu Kitang assemblyman Dato Lo Khere Chiang has urged the Sarawak government to upgrade the hazardous Mile 15 roundabout to an elevated U-turn to address mounting safety concerns.
Speaking during the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting today while debating the motion of appreciation on the TYT’s address, Lo also appealed for the approval of a new access road connecting Jalan Stephen Yong/Jalan Batu Kitang to Jalan Landeh/RPR Landeh, citing growing congestion caused by rapid housing developments in the area.
He expressed heartfelt thanks to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for swiftly approving two major dual carriageway upgrades—Jalan Batu Kitang and Jalan Bau Lama—with an allocation of RM500 million each.
“His swift action—after driving the route himself—shows true leadership. This project will greatly improve connectivity from Batu Kitang to Bau and boost tourism,” he said.
Lo also extended appreciation to Minister of Works Malaysia Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi for greenlighting the RM400 million Mile 8 Interchange and Flyover Project.
“I first raised this critical need in this House on April 18, 2023, with follow-ups on April 27 and May 17. This long-awaited development will ease traffic congestion for thousands of commuters. We are fortunate to have a fellow Sarawakian in federal office who understands our needs,” he said.
On another pressing matter, Lo called on Padungan assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen to press the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board (CVLB) under the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to take immediate action on the frequent and disruptive movement of overloaded lorries along Jalan Arang.
“These lorries are not only dangerous but also disturb the peace of residents. Action must be taken swiftly,” he stressed.
He further called for transparency on the Trans Borneo Railway feasibility study, stating: “Sarawakians deserve an update—we want clarity on the way forward.”
Touching on local safety, he pointed out that Batu Kitang Flood Alert Sirens must be tested at least twice a year to ensure they are fully functional in emergencies.
In terms of road conditions, he proposed that the damaged stretch between Batu Kitang Bridge and Kampung Haji Baki junction be tar-sealed while awaiting the dual carriageway construction to improve safety in the interim.
Lastly, Lo highlighted the recurring urban flooding caused by clogged roadside drains during heavy rainfall.
“Water splashes all over the place because of surface water. Regular inspections and maintenance by all relevant agencies are urgently needed to ensure proper drainage,” he added. — DayakDaily
