KUCHING, June 25: The Batu Kawah Waterfront was launched today by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg to spur the development of the Batu Kawah riverside into a tourist hub.
The RM10 million project was proposed by Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian and is expected to be completed by the year 2020.
“This project will benefit both Batu Kawah and Kuching as a whole”, said Dr Sim, who is also Batu Kawah assemblyman, at the launching ceremony today at Dewan Persatuan Chung Hua Batu Kawa Kuching.
“Just like Siniawan, Batu Kawah is full of historical value. With this new landmark, undoubtedly, it will be a famous tourist destination. At the same time, this will create business opportunities among the locals.”
According to Dr Sim, the project will also provide recreational facilities for local residents as well as tourists. Hence, this in turn will promote a healthier lifestyle within the community.
This project was supposed to be a joint collaboration between the previous federal government and the Sarawak government. However, after GE14, due to the change in federal government, the project was then put on hold. — DayakDaily
