KUCHING, March 27: The Sarawak government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening infrastructure and road connectivity with the launch of the Batang Rajang Bridge, a key driver for socio-economic development in Sarikei, Bintangor, and Tanjung Manis.
According to the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak, the bridge’s pre-launch ceremony was officiated today by Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who also serves as Second Minister for Finance and New Economy as well as Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development.
The event was well-attended by local leaders, government officials, and members of the public who gathered to witness this milestone moment.
Spanning 1,440 metres, the RM321.4 million bridge is a vital component of the Sarawak Coastal Road Network.
Once fully operational, it will offer safer and more efficient travel while enhancing access to industrial and agricultural zones along the coast.
The project dramatically shortens travel distances—reducing the route from Sarikei to Tanjung Manis from 122 km to just 53 km, slashing travel time from 2.5 hours to only 45 minutes.
Similarly, the route from Bintangor to Tanjung Manis will shrink from 108 km to 60 km, with travel time cut from two hours to one.
Beyond improving transportation, the bridge is expected to unlock economic opportunities by facilitating the swift movement of goods and agricultural produce from rural areas to broader markets.
Its direct link to Tanjung Manis Port is anticipated to spur trade, investment, and tourism in the surrounding regions.
The bridge also promises major benefits for local communities. With shorter travel times and lower transportation costs, residents of Sarikei, Bintangor, and Tanjung Manis will enjoy better access to essential services such as education, healthcare, and employment.
Though officially opened to the public today, minor works on the bridge are still underway.
Road users are advised to exercise caution and follow all traffic regulations for their safety.
In a symbolic gesture, Uggah led a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by a convoy drive across the new bridge from Sarikei toward Tanjung Manis. — DayakDaily
