KUCHING, Jan 26: The Batang Lupar 1 Bridge in Sri Aman is scheduled to open to the public in May 2026, when it is expected to become the longest river-crossing bridge in Malaysia, marking a major milestone in Sarawak’s coastal infrastructure development.

In a Facebook post today, the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak said the project reached a significant stage with the successful completion of the Stitching Ceremony, which marked the connection of the bridge’s main structure during a ceremony held in Samarahan.

The ceremony was officiated by Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development (Infrastructure Development) Datuk Ir Aidel Lariwoo, reflecting the Sarawak government’s continued commitment to strengthening strategic connectivity in support of public welfare and economic growth.

Designed as a two-lane, one-way bridge spanning Batang Lupar, the bridge features 87 river piers and is being constructed to JKR R5 standards. With a total length of 4,884 metres, Batang Lupar 1 Bridge is among the most significant bridge projects ever undertaken in Sarawak.

Once completed, the permanent bridge will replace the Batang Lupar ferry service, providing a safer, more efficient and uninterrupted route linking coastal villages from Sebuyau to Triso. The improved connectivity is expected to open up new areas for commercial, agricultural and tourism activities, stimulating sustainable socio-economic growth along the Sebuyau–Triso corridor and strengthening development in Sarawak’s coastal regions.

JKR Sarawak reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all projects are implemented in line with the highest standards of quality, safety and integrity, in keeping with the state’s aspiration to deliver infrastructure that benefits both the people and Sarawak’s future.
