Batang Igan Ferry Point: Extra ferry services to ease Hari Raya congestion

IGAN, April 26: Three more ferries will be running simultaneously over the next few weeks in a move to help relieve heavy congestion and facilitate river crossings at Batang Igan Ferry Point for the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.

Deputy Minister in the Premier of Sarawak’s Office (Integrity and Ombudsman) Dato Dr Juanda Jaya said the request for more ferries at the Batang Igan Ferry Point has been put to Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

“We have requested for additional three ferries to operate simultaneously from early morning until 1am in order to reduce the congestion at the crossings.


“We also request that the (ferry) services be extended one week after Hari Raya to ensure that the people returning to their villages will not have face delays or congestions,” he said in a news report by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) on Monday (April 25).

Dr Juanda, who is also a Jemoreng assemblyman, took the opportunity to visit the Batang Igan Ferry Point during an official visit to his constituency.

He added that the Public Works Department (JKR) has also carried out inspections and fixed all damages around the ferry point to improve the ferry services.

With that, Dr Juanda strongly advised ferry users to always be on alert, be careful and follow the instructions by ferry operators to ensure the safety of all parties.

Earlier on, he visited Kampung Igan and surrounding areas to inspect some of the development projects implemented there.

The Rural Transformation Project (RTP) 2022 consisted the proposed upgrading of a belian jetty in Rumah Temah Isai area in Kampung Sekerang, a new Igan Women Entrepreneurs Activities Centre in Matu, a new connecting bridge project in Kampung Pulau area, a new connecting bridge project in Ismunie Mohamad area in Kampung Pulau Igan, a proposed futsal court near Kampung Tengah Igan and upgrading of a jetty at Lorong Dengin in Kebuaw, Matu. — DayakDaily
