KUCHING, March 20: Bas.MY Kuching will introduce six new routes to Arang Road, Hui Sing Garden, Siburan, Samarahan, Stutong Baru/Kuching Sentral and Taman Sukma beginning April 1, while routes serving Matang Jaya, King Centre and Bako will be discontinued as part of a network optimisation exercise.
Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) Sarawak chairman Michael Kong said the move is aimed at improving service efficiency and better aligning routes with actual passenger demand.
He noted that since the launch of the first Bas.MY Kuching route on March 5, 2025, the service has steadily expanded to 10 routes and, as of Feb 28, 2026, has ferried 691,693 passengers.
“During the first year of operation, we successfully registered 14,402 users for our concession cards, which allow holders to enjoy unlimited free bus rides,” he said in a statement today.
Kong added that CVLB Sarawak has been closely monitoring operational data and ridership patterns, which revealed a significant drop in passenger numbers after 7pm, with many bus trips running with minimal or no passengers.

To optimise resources, he said the board decided to reduce certain bus frequencies and discontinue three routes, namely Q02 Matang Jaya, Q03 King Centre and Q04 Bako, due to low demand or overlapping coverage.
“The savings generated from these adjustments will allow us to expand the network further,” he said.
Effective April 1, six new routes, namely Q11 Arang Road, Q12 Taman Hui Sing, Q13 Siburan, Q14 Samarahan, Q15 Stutong Baru/Kuching Sentral and Q16 Taman Sukma, will be introduced, bringing the total number of Bas.My Kuching routes to 13.
Kong said the expanded network will improve connectivity to key destinations and commercial hubs, including Kuching International Airport (KIA), Kuching Sentral, Moyan, AEON Mall and Summer Mall.
He added that several residential areas such as Kenyalang, Hui Sing, Stampin Resettlement Scheme, Arang Road, Samarindah and Taman Sukma will also benefit from enhanced accessibility, offering residents a more convenient alternative mode of transport.
“This expansion reflects our commitment to continuously refine and improve Bas.MY Kuching based on actual ridership data and public needs,” he said.
Kong emphasised that strengthening public transportation is key to reducing traffic congestion, improving accessibility and supporting sustainable urban development.
“With the expanded network, we hope more people will embrace Bas.MY Kuching and make public transport a regular part of their daily commute,” he added.
He said CVLB Sarawak will continue to monitor service performance and work with relevant stakeholders to further enhance public transportation in Kuching for the benefit of the community. — DayakDaily
