Baru calls for thorough probe into alleged sodomy case in Lawas

Baru Bian

KUCHING, May 21: Works Minister Baru Bian hopes the police would conduct a thorough investigation into the case of a primary school teacher in Lawas who was alleged to have sodomised five of his pupils in 2016.

The five victims were aged between 13 and 15.

The 31-year-old suspect, who has been working in Lawas since 2012, was detained yesterday, and the case is being investigated under Section 377B of the Penal Code.

“… it was really sad to me”, said Baru in a statement yesterday.

“I urge the police to make a thorough investigation so that such cases can be prosecuted appropriately. It is extremely painful if a teacher who is expected to educate and nurture our children commits such an indecent act.

“If the findings are true, then the offender must be brought before the court and punished accordingly.”

Baru, who is Ba’ Kelalan assemblyman, also urged all quarters to work together to fight against all abuses of power and immoral acts.

“I would like to draw all to work together to fight all forms of abuse of power and indecent acts in our society.

“All communities should dare to report to the authorities, especially to the police. We cannot allow crime to continue and let perpetrators walk scot-free,” he emphasised. — DayakDaily
