KUCHING, Jan 29: Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen has pitched a daring idea to make Malaysia the talk of the world ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign.

He is calling for a live Netflix broadcast of legendary free solo climber Alex Honnold scaling an iconic Malaysian landmark, such as Merdeka 118 or the Petronas Twin Towers.

“This is not mere advertising; it is a premium global media event that would capture the imagination of millions worldwide, showcasing Malaysia as a bold, modern and visionary destination,” he said in a statement today.

He cited the Taipei 101 stunt as proof: a USD 500,000 event that sparked global headlines and social media frenzy, delivering millions in tourism publicity value.

Dr Yii said Malaysia is ready: Netflix is already on Unifi TV, Telekom Malaysia has partnered with Tourism Malaysia before, and the Film in Malaysia Incentive (FIMI) can support production.

“This represents a golden opportunity to achieve unprecedented global reach and rebrand Malaysia’s image with exceptional cost efficiency.

“I strongly urge the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) to immediately commission a feasibility study to make this groundbreaking event as one of the centerpiece of the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign,” he added. – DayakDaily
