Bandar Kuching MP lends fire victims a helping hand

KUCHING, Feb 19: Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii will source for funds to help the recent fire victims at Sg Apong repair their damaged house.

The Democratic Action Party (DAP) lawmaker is also assisting the victims, a family of seven including five children, to get aid from the Welfare Department and the District Office.

He visited the victims today, who are currently putting up with a relative living nearby, to present food rations. He also handed over a RM2,000 donation.


“We are grateful that no one was hurt during the fire (on Feb 16). The family is currently living temporarily at a home owned by a nearby relative. However, conditions in that temporary shelter are not ideal as there are about 20 people living in that house.

“I paid a personal visit to the house to better understand the issues faced by them and also to pass them food such as rice, oil, biscuits, sugar, salt and drinks.

“This will hopefully help the family for the time being, especially to make sure the children get proper nutrition during this time,” he said in a statement.

He added that the affected family lost almost everything, including important documents such as the children’s birth certificates, marriage certificate and identification cards due to the fire.

The family was assisted by the Welfare Department and a police report was already lodged and processed to apply for those documents, he continued.

“They also lost most of their clothes and, hopefully, the assistance provided will help them purchase some of these necessary items.”

He expressed content with the Fire and Rescue Department for their quick response to the incident.

“I was informed that within seven minutes of the call, they were there, and within 20 minutes, the fire was put off. Currently, there is an ongoing investigation to better determine the cause of the fire.” — DayakDaily
