KUCHING, Oct 24: Bandar Kuching incumbent Dr Kelvin Yii has called for voters to don their face masks ahead of the 15th General Election (GE15) following the emergence of the Covid-19 Omicron XBB sub-variant.

He said the Election Commission (EC) and the Ministry of Health (MOH) are currently working to come up with proper standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the voting process.

“The fact is, I have always been critical of EC in the sense that they have not been creative and innovative enough to come up with proper procedures, especially, for example, postal voting.

“But with that said, I think they have proper SOPs, and the MOH is working very closely to ensure that all voters that come out (to vote) are safe.

“For those who are sick and Covid-19 positive, I was informed that they will vote in a separate area and a controlled environment so that they do not infect the rest,” he told the press after a ‘Sarawak Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders with the youth’ programme held at a local cafe here today.

Thus, he further encouraged the people to wear face masks as much as possible during the general polls.

At the same time, Dr Yii said Sarawak Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) decision to use the party’s rocket logo instead of PH’s was because the constituents would recognise and are more familiar with the DAP logo.

It is also part of the State party’s autonomy to decide on their own relating to the candidacy, seeking negotiations, and even logo.

Sarawak PH comprises DAP, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah).

Also present during the event were DAP veteran leader Lim Kit Siang, Sarawak PH and Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen, Amanah Sarawak chairman Abang Halil Abang Naili, and Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong. — DayakDaily
