KUCHING, Dec 4: Construction of the Balai Ringin treated water supply project is progressing ahead of schedule, with completion expected by April 2027 while additional treated water supply projects are also being implemented in the Sabal area and near Melikin.
According to Balai Ringin assemblyman Datuk Snowdan Lawan, the Balai Ringin treated water supply project forms part of the broader Serian Regional Water Supply Phase II project. The project commenced in October 2024 and is scheduled for completion within 30 months.
Implemented in two stages, Stage I is currently 18 per cent ahead of schedule, while Stage II is two per cent ahead.

“These projects are fully funded by the state GPS government and Jabatan Bekalan Air Luar Bandar (JBALB) is the implementing agency.
“Thus far, structural and pipe laying works to the relevant pump house and generator (genset) house, river crossing, bore piles works and interconnection works at Slabi Water Treatment Plant are progressing well. The water will be supplied from the Slabi Water Treatment Plant located at Serian.
“Distribution and reticulation works to villages and settlements are being undertaken. More than 90 villages in the Balai Ringin sub district, 20 schools, offices, places of worship, and business premises will benefit from this project,” he said in a statement.
He also shared that a High-Level Tank (HLT) with a capacity of three million litres per day (MLD) is also being constructed near the Melikin junction to support current demand and population growth. The facility will benefit approximately 825 households.
Similarly, a reservoir with a capacity of 1.8MLD is being built in Sabal, benefiting an estimated 900 households.
“If you travel along the Pan Borneo Highway from Serian towards Sri Aman, you will notice that pipe laying is evidently in progress.
“As such, I appeal to residents in Balai Ringin to render due cooperation to the implementing agency and the contractors to ensure smooth delivery of this treated water supply project, for everyone’ s own good and welfare,” Snowdan said. – DayakDaily
