MIRI, Nov 4: Several joggers at Bulatan Park were startled when a man suddenly jumped into the pond in the Saberkas area here yesterday around 6am.

Some joggers immediately rushed to the pond as they were worried for the man’s safety. However, the water level was only up to the man’s chest and he appeared to prefer just standing in the pond, keeping silent.

The passersby attempted to persuade him to get out from the pond, but to no avail.

After failing to coax the man out, they called the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) and Miri Civil Defence Force (APM) for assistance around 3.55pm. Teams from the two organisations rushed to the scene.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the man, aged 27, is thought to be emotionally unstable. Sources added that the man had earlier run away from a centre for such patients in Pujut 5 here.

The enforcement officers managed to persuade the man to get out from the pond around 6.13pm and they sent him back to the centre for further action. — DayakDaily
