Authorities commit to higher safety standards after Samarahan Bike Challenge incident

KOTA SAMARAHAN, July 1: The Samarahan District Office will further strengthen participant safety and welfare measures for future editions of the Samarahan Bike Challenge following an incident during the 2026 edition on June 28.

In a statement issued on Tuesday (June 30), the office expressed regret over the incident while emphasising that the safety, wellbeing and welfare of participants, event personnel and members of the public remain the top priority throughout the organisation of the programme.

“Emergency response teams, together with medical personnel, were immediately deployed following the incident to provide swift assistance to the affected participants,” it said in a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news.

The district office also expressed its appreciation to medical staff, emergency responders, enforcement agencies and technical officers for their prompt action in managing the situation and bringing it under control.

“We are working closely with the Sarawak Cycling Association as the technical partner, alongside enforcement agencies and other relevant stakeholders, to establish the facts and obtain a comprehensive understanding of the incident,” it added.

Members of the public have been advised not to speculate or circulate unverified information while the investigation and verification process is ongoing.

“The findings of the investigation will be thoroughly reviewed to identify areas for improvement in planning, coordination and safety protocols for future events,” the district council assured.

The Samarahan District Office reaffirmed its commitment to continue collaborating with all stakeholders to ensure that every cycling event in Kota Samarahan adheres to the highest standards of safety, organisation and coordination.
