Abdul Rahman Junaidi-Kelalong and Assyakirin reservoir safe for consumption-12/11/20
KUCHING, Nov 12: Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs and DBKU) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi assured that the water catchment of the Kelalong and Assyakirin Reservoir of Laku Management Sdn. Bhd. (LAKU) Bintulu is not contaminated by the surrounding plantations and farms.
According to Abdul Rahman, the protection of raw water sources is under the purview of the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), and so far, there are no reports or complaints received by Laku and NREB on any raw water contamination at the Assyakirin Reservoir.
“As the water supply operator, LAKU carries out raw water quality monitoring on a daily basis in accordance with the requirements specified in the National Drinking Water Quality Standards (NDWQS) issued by the Ministry of Health (MOH) Malaysia.
“At the same time, NREB also carries out raw water quality monitoring on a quarterly basis. To date, there has been no violation of the raw water quality parameters,” he said.
Abdul Rahmann said this in reply to the question raised by DAP Tanjong Batu assemblyman Chiew Chiu Sing querying on whether both of the reservoir water is safe for consumption, during the question and answer session at the August House, today.
Abdul Rahman said to ensure that the treated water quality complies with NDWQS and safe for human consumption, Laku has taken measures such as carrying out in-house monitoring of water quality from the raw water extraction point up to the water treatment plant outlet and more frequent intervals and at every stage of the water treatment process as well as at the distribution system and consumers interface.
“LAKU is also collecting water samples to be tested by the Department of Chemistry (DOC) based on the schedules provided by MOH,” he added. –DayakDaily.
