KUCHING, June 2: Police are currently tracking down four suspects connected to the assault of a Sarawak Deputy Minister that occurred at the roadside of Tabuan Jaya housing area onTuesday (May 30).
Confirming that the Kuching police headquarters had received a police report from the Deputy Minister on the incident, Sarawak Police Commissioner Dato Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said the police had opened an investigation under Section 323/506 of the Penal Code.
“The Deputy Minister claimed to have encountered four suspects believed to be local citizens who were acting suspiciously and had scolded them.
“However, one of the suspects, who was displeased with the admonishment, launched an attack on the Deputy Minister, resulting in injuries including scratches and pain on the back of his body,” Mohd Azman said in a statement issued late yesterday (June 1).
The incident happened on May 30 at 9.06pm at the side of the road of the Tabuan Jaya housing area.
Section 323 of the Penal Code provides an imprisonment term of up to one year or with a fine of up to RM2,000 or with both, while Section 506 provides an imprisonment term which can be extended to two years, or fine, or both, upon conviction.
Due to the ongoing investigations, Mohd Azman has appealed to the public not to engage in speculation but to provide the police with the necessary space to conduct thorough investigations and apprehend the suspects involved.
The police also called on the public with any information related to the incident to relay them to any nearby police station or contact case investigating officer ASP Rathna Borhan at 019-8176267. — DayakDaily
