KUCHING, Sept 29: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stressed that Malaysian history must reflect the true facts of the nation and present what Malaysians should rightfully know, instead of being dictated by colonial or Western narratives.
Speaking at the launching of Visit Malaysia 2026 in Melaka last Saturday night (Sept 27), Anwar said history should not only be truthful but also reclaim the nation’s legacy from distortion.
“History should not be written by colonial masters. History must not be dictated by the West. It must represent the true facts of Malaysia and what Malaysians should know,” he said.
He recalled the words of prominent sociologist Professor Syed Hussein Alatas, who in 1961 had urged historians to remain faithful to Malaysia’s past and not reduce it to stories of subjugation or servitude.
Anwar emphasised that Malaysia was once a thriving civilisation and major trading hub that engaged with both East and West. This included ties with the Chinese empire through Admiral Zheng He, or Cheng Ho, as well as connections with Princess Hang Li Po, which were re-enacted during the ceremony.
The Prime Minister underscored that such historical truths must continue to be highlighted to strengthen national identity and pride as Malaysia prepares to welcome visitors from across the globe in 2026.
Meanwhile, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Dato Sri Tiong King Sing said the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign is not just about boosting tourist arrivals but also about strengthening unity, growing the people’s economy and showcasing Malaysia’s heritage as a living force.
“Tourism is not about numbers alone. It is about how we turn our heritage into strength, transform tourism into the people’s economy and build Malaysia into a brand that the world remembers with pride,” he said in his speech.
Tiong pointed out that Malaysia’s diversity is a strength that sets it apart globally, and VM2026 will highlight not only heritage cities and natural wonders but also reforestation projects, community tourism and sustainable initiatives.
“Tourism must benefit everyone, from families in rural homestays to artisans in workshops, hawkers, and young entrepreneurs. Only when tourism is felt at the grassroots level does it truly become a people’s economy,” he added.
He assured that the Ministry, with strong support from the Prime Minister and Ministry of Finance, will continue to deliver concrete results through global sales missions, digital innovation and regional collaborations leading up to 2026.
