Another double-digit spike in Covid-19 cases for Jalan Muhibbah’s cockfighting cluster

KUCHING, March 9: The Jalan Muhibbah Cluster in Betong saw yet another double-digit spike in Covid-19 cases with 29 recorded overnight.

As such, the cluster’s total has ballooned to 262 today.

The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC)’s daily Covid-19 situation for Sarawak update revealed that this social gathering cluster was one of five active clusters that registered an increase in Covid-19 cases today.


As of today, a total of 2,621 individuals related to this cluster have been screened whereby 2,220 were negative and 139 are awaiting for lab test results.

Apart from this, the two funeral clusters of Emperoh Jambu in Kuching and Gelong in Kapit picked up five cases and one case respectively.

The Emperoh Jambu Cluster, which was linked to a funeral at a village in Padawan, has infected a total of 237 people, while the Gelong Cluster which emerged in Taman Sri Gelong at Jalan Selirik after a man tested positive following his father’s funeral, has risen to 210 cases.

A total of 1,000 individuals linked to the Emperoh Jambu Cluster have been screened whereby 825 tested negative and 138 are awaiting lab results.

As for the Gelong Cluster, a total of 257 individuals have been screened whereby 47 were negative and no results are pending.

The Bukit Tunggal Cluster in Julau, which emerged due to ‘gotong-royong’ (work party) paddy harvesting, registered four cases today to push the cluster’s total to 36.

A total of 143 individuals have been screened whereby 107 tested negative and no results are pending.

The Jalan Awang Cluster in Sibu, which involved detainees in a prison located at Jalan Awang Ramli Amit, picked up one case today to increase the cluster’s total to 43.

The cluster was formed after 42 detainees tested positive for Covid-19 two days ago (March 7) following active case detection carried out during their quarantine period.

As this cluster was confined to detainees, a total of 44 individuals have been screened as of today, whereby only one person tested negative.

With 26 active clusters in Sarawak, the remaining 21 clusters did not report any new cases today.

They are Kiba, Geronggang, Mas Merah and the prolific Pasai in Sibu; Buloh in Selangau; Jalan Ho Pin and Univista in Samarahan; Sungai Bakong in Meradong, Kampung Sungai Maong and Jalan Green in Kuching; Kejatau and Sebangkoi in Sri Aman; Jan Yong in Kapit; Kidurong Dua and Jun Heng in Bintulu; Nanga Lijan in Julau; Seruas in Beluru; Bintang Daily in Meradong; Jalan Pengiran in Matu; Tabong in Bau; Rakut in Miri; as well as sub-cluster Tangap in Subis.

Meanwhile, Sarawak recorded one Covid-19 fatality in Mukah and 163 new cases today with Betong the district with the most daily infections at 37 cases followed by Miri (25), Bintulu (23), Sibu (17), Subis (15), Kuching (12), Julau (9), Asajaya and Kapit (6 each), Sarikei (4), Pusa (3), and Samarahan (2) while Bau, Kanowit, Tatau and Dalat reported one case each.

This thus increased the state’s tally of Covid-19 cases to 11,511. — DayakDaily
