KUCHING, Dec 31: The construction of the main building overlooking a 20-acre natural lake under the first phase of the Ang Cheng Ho Quarry rejuvenation project in Batu Kawah here is nearing completion and planning for the constructions of surrounding facilities including car parks are now underway.
In a statement issued by Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Batu Kawah service centre, Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian expressed satisfaction with the progress and construction works of the project that will not only transform and breathe new life into the abandoned Ang Cheng Ho Quarry, but add another stunning landmark to Batu Kawah and Greater Kuching.
The RM9.8 million makeover project for Phase 1 will feature a 19,375 square feet multipurpose hall that can accommodate 1,000 people for various kinds of events, basketball court and a 3,000 square feet of space to serve as an innovation hub for young entrepreneurs and to empower startups and social enterprises.
Future development plans, the statement added, would include facilities for water and extreme sports, public green park and other recreational facilities.
Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) appointed a surveyor and architect to plan the project on July 11, 2020.
This was followed by a tender process which was awarded to contractor Tenaga Sri Wangsa Sdn Bhd for the first phase, with groundworks beginning on Nov 16, 2020.
The new facility on the four-acre site sitting partially on top of the lake was expected to be completed in 15 months.
