KUCHING, Oct 2: At 19, Awang Sharzan Awang Nasaruddin is a beacon of perseverance of passion.
Representing Sarawak, he has made a place for himself in the world of diving, with his recent performance at the Malaysian Games (Sukma) XXI Sarawak 2024 marking a significant milestone. Awang Sharzan claimed a gold medal in mixed 3-metre synchronised diving event, a remarkable achievement that reflects his dedication and relentless spirit.
His victory is not merely a testament to his skill, but a demonstration of years of hard work and personal growth.
Reflecting on his journey, Awang Sharzan’s path to Sukma was not always adorned with medals. His first Sukma in 2018 saw him finish seventh, and in the subsequent 2022 edition, he placed fourth. Thus, this year’s gold medal is more than a symbol of his success; it represents his growth and unwavering resolve.
Despite this achievement, Awang Sharzan remains humble, believing that he has the potential to accomplish even more. His progression from seventh place to gold exemplifies a remarkable journey of perseverance and self-belief, underscoring his commitment to continuous improvement and consistency in his performances.
The serendipitous start
Awang Sharzan’s entry into the sport was as fortunate as it was fortuitous. It began with a casual outing to the Sarawak Youth and Sports Complex near Wisma Saberkas, where a selection process was taking place. What was intended to be a simple swim turned into a crucial moment that set the course for his future.
He and his siblings found themselves in the right place at the right time, and this chance encounter led them to try their hands at diving.
Over the past eight years, Awang Sharzan has devoted himself to diving with a passion that seems almost poetic.
“For me, diving is life. Even on my rest days, I still imagine myself diving,” he revealed, a confession to the deep connection he has with the sport.
Diving, while exhilarating, has not been without its trials. Awang Sharzan has faced his share of difficulties, including a significant hip injury in 2023. The injury, which flared up during a crucial competition, could have sidelined him for good. Yet, his resilience shines through as he continues with basic training despite the setback.
“I can do it (basic training),” he asserted, embodying the spirit of an athlete who refuses to be deterred by obstacles.
The journey has not always been smooth, but his determination to rise above challenges is a key part of his story. Even amidst physical pain and setbacks, his commitment to the sport remains unshaken.
Family, the greatest pillar of support
Awang Sharzan’s achievements are closely intertwined with his family’s support. His parents have been his unwavering supporters, their encouragement a driving force behind his success.
“My parents have been my biggest supporters. Without them, I guess I would never become a diver,” he said, reflecting his deep gratitude for their role in his life. His family’s belief in his potential has been a constant source of motivation, fuelling his drive to excel.
Moreover, his relationship with his younger sister, Dayang Nursharzyra Awang Nasaruddin, is a source of pride and inspiration. Despite their separation due to her enrolment in the Bukit Jalil Sports School, Awang Sharzan continues to cheer for her, celebrating her successes as if they were his own.
While he is happy about the opportunity Dayang Nursharzyra received, Awang Sharzan admitted that it is also his dream to join the national team. The sibling bond they share stands as a proof to their mutual support and encouragement.
Balancing passion and aspiration
The dedication Awang Sharzan has towards diving is reflected in his rigorous training regimen; training every day except Sundays, dedicating five hours each day to perfecting his technique and pushing his limits. His commitment extends beyond physical training—it’s a mental and emotional dedication to his craft.
His aspirations are equally ambitious. Currently studying sports science at MARA University of Technology (UiTM), Samarahan, Awang Sharzan envisions a future where he not only excels in diving but also makes contributions to sports by being a physical education teacher should he ever join the education field.
Awang Sharzan’s dream of qualifying for the next Southeast Asian (SEA) Games is a driving force, and despite occasional nerves, he remains motivated by the support of his coaches and family.
Battles beneath the surface
His journey is not only marked by his achievements but also by the emotional depth he brings to his sport. Awang Sharzan spoke candidly about the moments of self-doubt and the guilt he feels when he is unable to perform at his best in synchronised diving.
“Whenever I do synchronised diving, I feel bad for not being able to perform well for my partner,” he admitted, a touching reminder of the high standards he sets for himself. His sensitivity to his partner’s performance reflects his commitment to teamwork and his desire to support those around him.
As Awang Sharzan sets his sights on the next SEA Games, his story is far from over. With each dive, he not only aims to make an impact in the sport but also to inspire others with his journey from casual diver to gold medallist, proving that dreams, when pursued with passion and resilience, can indeed come true. — DayakDaily
