KUCHING, Nov 11: Amir Hamzah Abu Bakar is the new managing director and general manager for Manufacturing, Shell MDS (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, which is the world’s first commercial gas-to-liquids (GTL) plant located in Bintulu, Sarawak, effective from Oct 1.
Bringing with him 29 years of experience in manufacturing, commercial, planning and optimisation, Amir will be responsible for managing and leading GTL manufacturing, marketing, sales and overall operational and financial performance of Shell MDS.
Commenting on the appointment, Shell Malaysia chairman Datuk Iain Lo said that Amir has been instrumental and has contributed towards a stronger and more sustainable operational capability and asset performance, in his previous role.
“We are happy to have our very own talent, known for his strong operational leadership leading our GTL business. I am confident that he will further drive our Shell MDS plant in bringing value for our customers and for Shell,” he added in a media release today.
Meanwhile, Amir will be based in Bintulu and will be leading the manufacturing and commercial teams of more than 450 people to produce and to market high-quality GTL specialties; and wax products under the brand name of Sarawax, to customers and distributors in more than 50 countries.
Prior to joining Shell in 2009, Amir had spent almost two decades of his career in petrochemical, polymers and chemical manufacturing in Malaysia, Indonesia and Australia.
In Shell, he held several leadership roles including site production manager for Shell Jurong Island, Singapore; and managing director and general manager for Shell Refining Company Berhad in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan.
In January 2017, Amir was appointed as an asset manager for one of Shell’s non-operated ventures in Sakhalin, Russia. During his tenure, the asset received Shell Integrated Gas Best Asset of the Year for outstanding overall asset performance.
Amir holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Manufacturing Engineering (Chemical) from Swinburne Institute of Technology, Melbourne, Australia and a Master’s in Business Administration from Nottingham Trent University, United Kingdom. He is married and has four children. – DayakDaily
