KUCHING, April 14: AmBank has expressed strong interest in participating in the development of a state financial hub in Sarawak should plans for such a project materialise in the future.
According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, AmBank Group managing director of Business Banking, Christopher Yap, said Sarawak has the potential to establish its own financial centre, similar to existing financial zones in other regions of Malaysia.
“There is potential for us to develop, for example, a financial hub for Sarawak. In southern Malaysia, we have a state financial zone, and in Penang there is also a state financial centre.
“So, possibly in Sarawak, there may be plans to build a state financial centre or hub. If such an opportunity arises, we would like to be involved,” he was quoted as saying.
Yap made the remarks when met by reporters after paying a courtesy call on Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here today.
He added that AmBank also discussed various matters related to the State’s economy with the Sarawak leadership and believed that the financial institution could play a greater role in the State’s economic development.
“We have had discussions, and many matters are being deliberated.
“AmBank believes we can play a bigger role in helping the state grow and encouraging more participation in Sarawak’s economy,” he said.
Also present during the meeting were Sarawak Financial Secretary Dato Sri Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar and Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel. — DayakDaily
