AirBorneo completes acquisition of MASwings

KUCHING, Dec 31: The Sarawak government, through AirBorneo Holdings Sdn Bhd (AirBorneo), has finalised the acquisition of MASwings Sdn Bhd, paving the way for its official operations starting Jan 1, 2026.

According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), the acquisition completion event was held today in Kuala Lumpur, with Sarawak Secretary and chairman of AirBorneo Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Sarawak Financial Secretary Dato Sri Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar and other representatives from AirBorneo, the Sarawak government as well as representatives from the Malaysian Aviation Group (MAG).

With the completion of the acquisition, AirBorneo will assume full legal and operational responsibilities of MASwings effective Jan 1, 2026, following the signing of the Sale and Purchase Agreement between the Sarawak government and MAG on Feb 12, 2025.

During this initial transition phase, the MASwings branding will continue, while AirBorneo implements the rollout of its new brand identity in stages.

“This acquisition supports the Sarawak Government’s strategic objectives of strengthening regional air connectivity and ensuring affordable fares for Sarawak and its people.

“This move marks a key step in supporting the state’s broader social and economic development agenda and lays the foundation for the airline’s next phase of growth as AirBorneo,” it said.

The Sarawak government also expressed its appreciation to all employees, partners, and stakeholders for their support throughout the transaction and the transition process.
