KUCHING, Jan 13: AirBorneo is not just an airline but a strategic bridge connecting Sarawak to the rest of the world, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said, describing the service as essential for trade, tourism, and access to remote communities.
Speaking at the Majlis Amanat Perdana Premier Sarawak 2026 at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today, he said the airline represents “another bridge” for the State.
“We are on an island and we need a bridge to connect us with the outside world,” he said.
The Premier highlighted that AirBorneo’s inaugural flights, including services to Mukah, reflect Sarawak’s commitment to strengthening air connectivity as a catalyst for regional development.
He said air connectivity is not a luxury but a necessity, connecting remote communities, supporting trade and tourism, enabling access to education and healthcare, and facilitating investment.
Abang Johari also noted that AirBorneo follows a unique business model tailored for Sarawak’s needs, setting it apart from other airlines.
“With AirBorneo, we are building another bridge for Sarawak, one that opens opportunities domestically and internationally while linking communities across the State,” he emphasised.
The Premier said that the launch of AirBorneo complements ongoing infrastructure initiatives, including planning for a new international airport and a deep seaport at Tanjung Embang, as the State continues its push to become a global player. — DayakDaily
