KUCHING, Sept 26: AirAsia has agreed to increase its flights to Sarawak following the reduction in flight frequencies by Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) for Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, and Amal.

Sarawak Minister for Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, stated that the reduction in flights by MAG has significantly affected routes to and from Sarawak.

To address this issue, AirAsia will introduce a wide-body Airbus A330 with 377 seats for daily flights between Kuala Lumpur and Kuching from Dec 20, 2024, to Jan 6, 2025, and again from Jan 17 to Feb 10, 2025, to manage the anticipated surge in passenger demand during the festive season.

According to MAG Berhad’s chart, the reductions involve the Kuala Lumpur-Bintulu flight frequency decreasing from 10 in September to 7 in December, Kuala Lumpur-Kuching flights dropping from 38 to 28, and Kuala Lumpur-Miri flights reducing from 24 to 13 by December.

The Kuala Lumpur-Miri flight frequency will remain at 8 flights per week from September to December 2024.

Lee noted that AirAsia had increased its Sarawak flights from 359 weekly in August to 364 in September.

Although this will slightly drop to 356 flights in October due to the off-season, the number will rise again to 384 flights in November and 406 flights in December.

To accommodate high passenger demand during the upcoming festive seasons, AirAsia will also deploy the wide-body Airbus A330 on the Kuala Lumpur-Kuching route during peak travel periods. ā€” DayakDaily
