KUCHING, June 12: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has revealed that Sarawak is looking into algae-based biomass to produce biofuel for jets and trucks in addition to powering aircraft.
Abang Johari said this when delivering his speech before launching the 2023 Forest Conservation Conference held today at a hotel here.
“Sarawak is very fortunate that we are gifted with an abundance of natural resources. We have renewable hydropower generated from mega dams and we are looking beyond this.
“We are now studying the possibility of producing algae-based biomass products, including biofuel for jets and trucks,” he disclosed.
He also disclosed that in the pathway of achieving Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050, the Sarawak government is embarking on a few mega projects in order to maximise socio-economic benefits and minimise carbon footprints at the same time.
“To mitigate climate change, development, promotion, and utilisation of renewable energy sources is one of the solutions,” he added.
Abang Johari, who is also the Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development and Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability, highlighted that Sarawak is also planning to accelerate the use of greener hydrogen energy sources, with the goal of becoming the first hydrogen-driven economy in Southeast Asia.
“We are poised and committed to begin large-scale commercial production of green hydrogen by 2027.
“The Sarawak government is very serious in advocating for a green economy and mitigating climate change,” he said.
Among others present at the conference were Deputy Premier of Sarawak Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, federal Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii, Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, and Sarawak Forest Department director Datu Hamden Mohammad. — DayakDaily
