NILAI, Aug 23: The Sarawak cycling squad made history once again at the 22nd Malaysia Games (Sukma) Selangor 2026 after track cyclist Adib Andhar Andan won the men’s keirin at the Malaysia National Velodrome here on Saturday (Aug 22).
In a news report from the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), the historic victory ended Sarawak’s 40-year wait for a gold medal in the event at the biennial Games.
In the six-man final, 20-year-old Adib made a steady start while keeping himself among the other riders. He began pulling away from the pack on the final lap before sprinting to the finish line to claim victory.
Johor’s Ahmad Danial Haiqal Ahmad Rifaiee took the silver medal, while Negeri Sembilan’s Muhammad Luqman Haqim Ali Badrun won bronze.
“Sarawak has never won the keirin event at Sukma. This is history. Alhamdulillah, this medal means a lot to me.
“I dedicate it to my mother, who just celebrated her birthday, and of course to Sarawak,” he said in an interview after the medal ceremony.
The Kuching-born national cyclist said he had made the most of opportunities to train alongside national keirin star Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang at the Malaysia National Velodrome, gaining valuable knowledge and experience to improve his skills.
He also described the victory as a meaningful way to conclude his Sukma journey after failing to win any medals at the previous edition held in Sarawak two years ago.
Looking ahead, he hopes to achieve success at the SEA Games, Asian Games, and Olympic Games.
Sarawak Minister for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah also witnessed the final race and presented the medals to the winners.
