KUCHING, Sept 20: An additional exit route at Miri Hospital will be opened for public use soon to reduce traffic congestion as it is expected to be fully completed next week.

In a news report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said the construction project for the new exit route started in July and is now in the final stages of paving and receiving final touches.

“This additional exit route is an immediate solution built to ease the problem of traffic congestion that often occurs, especially during peak hours, at the Miri Hospital compound.

“So far, there are only two exits and entrances to Miri Hospital, but they are not sufficient,” he said after reviewing the project’s progress today.

Lee explained that the project involved agencies such as the Public Works Department (JKR) and Miri Hospital, as well as Endaya Construction Sdn Bhd as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme for the welfare of the public.

“Miri Hospital has no funds to implement this additional project. Therefore, we are taking steps to do CSR together with JKR and Miri Hospital as well as contractors with each providing building materials, culverts, workforce, design, and expertise,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Senadin assemblyman also emphasised a long-term solution for Miri Hospital in the form of a multi-storey carpark like the one at Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching to provide convenience for visitors.

He said that once the new hospital building is completed, the number of vehicles from hospital staff and the public will increase. — DayakDaily
