KUCHING, Jan 21: Rajang Port Authority (RPA) has been urged to enhance its infrastructure and operations with new technologies.

Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD) Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said that this move is crucial to prepare the port authority for the challenges ahead when the economy has recovered.

“Once the economy improves, business will improve.

“Is RPA able to cope in terms of software, equipment, more investments and so forth? ” he raised in a statement today.

Uggah, who is also Deputy Chief Minister, was given a briefing on RPA development, achievements and issues during a visit to the RPA main office in Sibu yesterday.

MIPD Assistant Minister Datuk Majang Renggi and RPA chairman Datuk Joseph Salang were also present.

Uggah emphasised that ports in Sarawak are expected to play a more prominent roles in line with the State government’s vision to make Sarawak a high income society by 2030.

“We are expecting an increase in the export volumes of our agricultural products,” he added.

He also suggested that RPA and Tanjung Manis ports look into ways to support each other instead of competing as the two ports are located along the same river. — DayakDaily
