KUCHING, March 1: Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who is the head of the government of Sarawak will officially be known as the ‘Premier’, effective from today (March 1) onwards.
This was confirmed by State Secretary Datuk Amar Jaul Samion following the gazettement of the Constitution of the State of Sarawak (Amendment) Bill, 2022 which comes into force today.
In a statement, Jaul informed that after the date of coming into force of the amendment, the Chief Minister of Sarawak will be addressed in English as the ‘Premier of Sarawak’ while in Bahasa Malaysia as ‘Premier Sarawak’.
The Office of the head of the Sarawak government, previously known as the Chief Minister’s Office will now be referred to in English as the ‘Office of the Premier of Sarawak’ and in Bahasa Malaysia as “Pejabat Premier Sarawak”.
“In this connection, Deputy Chief Minister (Timbalan Ketua Menteri) will be referred to as Deputy Premier (Timbalan Premier) and Assistant Minister (Menteri Muda) as Deputy Minister (Timbalan Menteri) with effect from today,” he said.
The Constitution of the State of Sarawak (Amendment) Bill, 2022 that sought to restyle the term Chief Minister to ‘Premier’ and Assistant Minister to ‘Deputy Minister’, amongst other amendments, was passed in the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN Sarawak) on Feb 15 with a two-thirds majority. — DayakDaily
