KUCHING, March 21: Sarawak aims to be the leader in economic development in Malaysia and gender will no longer be a factor in leadership, said Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He stated during his keynote address that while the State possesses the resources necessary to fulfil such aspirations, it still lags in terms of talent development.
“We have to upgrade talent development. But, we must also comply with the international protocol and position ourselves there,” he said today during the Sarawak Women of Tomorrow Bootcamp 2022, which took place from March 19 to 21 at a local hotel.
Abang Johari also stated that gender equality would be a non-issue in the future, as the new era would emphasise a person’s talent and calibre than their gender.
He believed that individuals of exceptional ability would become leaders regardless of race or gender.
“But the time will come. In the next 20 years, this concept will no longer be relevant as whoever can bring about change and upgrade the standard of living will be the leaders,” he said.
Abang Johari also questioned the policy of having 30 per cent of women in the decision-making process.
Additionally, he asked why women are not represented at the decision-making level at 50 or even 60 per cent.
“Why limit it to 30 per cent? Why can’t you become the chairperson of the board? Well, to be the chairperson, you must be the leader. To be the leader, you must lead.
“To lead, you must have something new. If it is not new, you are a follower,” he pointed out,
He also added that an individual’s calibre, knowledge, and willingness to explore new ideas were more important. — DayakDaily
