KUCHING, Oct 30: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has channeled an additional RM50,000 to the Sarawak Orphan Children Welfare Board (Peryatim) to strengthen its efforts in supporting orphaned children and improving their quality of life.

He made the announcement during the Ad-Interact International Sdn Bhd and Peryatim charity dinner held at a hotel here tonight.

“I would also like to thank welfare institutions, the corporate sector and members of the public who have made meaningful contributions towards supporting these children.

“And tonight, let me add a little more. I am contributing an additional RM50,000 to the orphanage association.

“I hope that, through everyone’s contributions, we will be able to help these children and enable them to succeed in their respective lives,” he added.

He said orphaned children needed proper guidance and support, particularly in religious and educational matters, to help them navigate life and achieve their potential.

He also commended Peryatim for its efforts in supporting the children’s education, noting that many of those under its care had gone on to graduate from universities and pursue careers in various fields, including engineering.

He said one former beneficiary had even pursued studies up to the doctoral level, reflecting the importance of sustained support and opportunities for orphaned children.

Abang Johari also acknowledged the contributions of the late Datuk Patinggi Laila Taib, who helped establish the orphanage association alongside others committed to charitable causes.

Meanwhile, RM46 million had been allocated for welfare assistance in Budget 2027, including aid for children, general assistance and persons with disabilities (OKU) unable to work.

He said the inclusive initiatives, including Free Tertiary Education Sarawak (FTES) and RM1,200 in pocket money assistance, would ease students’ financial burden while pursuing higher education.

Abang Johari said the State government wanted to ensure that all children, including orphans, could eventually become part of a skilled workforce to support Sarawak’s development, particularly in high-tech industries.

He also thanked AD Interact International Sdn Bhd, singer Amir Masdi, sponsors and strategic partners for their contributions towards making the charity dinner a success. — DayakDaily
