KAPIT, June 3: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is among the top leaders to attend the 2023 United Malays National Organisation (Umno) general assembly.
Umno president Datuk Patinggi Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Abang Johari’s attendance was confirmed by the man himself during Zahid’s visit to his residence this morning.
“I wish to thank the Premier of Sarawak (Abang Johari) as GPS chairman, who confirmed with me this morning when I went to his house (that) he will come on June 9 to the Dewan Merdeka in conjunction with Umno’s annual general assembly.
“This is a meaningful manifestation to me because the Prime Minister (Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim) will also attend as the Pakatan Harapan chairman and unity government leader,” he said at a press conference during his visit to Rh Richard Engking today.
He further said that Parti Warisan (Warisan) president Datuk Seri Panglima Shafie Apdal has also confirmed his attendance, while Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) chairman Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor has yet to do so.
He also said all presidents of political parties in the unity government have been invited to the general assembly, which will commence from June 7 to 10.
The federal government is a coalition of 19 political parties.
Zahid further said the attendance of the top leaders symbolised a good sign and appreciation to Umno and Barisan Nasional, where it visualised that the unity government is working hard to strengthen its position and structure.
“We have gathered together at least three times for the unity government leadership secretariat committee.
“We will face the upcoming six state elections that will be announced by the end of this month, and we hope that the victory will go to the component parties of the unity government,” he added. — DayakDaily
