KUCHING, July 2: Abang Jamadi Rosli and Lim Siat Fah emerged champions for the men’s and women’s 20km categories during the Matang Warrior (Survivor) Trail Run held today at Matang Camp.
The two winners were among 875 participants who registered for the jungle trail run consisting of 2km, 5km, 10km, and 20km categories.
They went home with RM600 cash and trophies, respectively.
Sarawak Scouts Council (SSC) president Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom said the second edition of the programme followed the success of last year’s inaugural event, which saw about 800 participants.
“It is a very successful (event), so we look forward to organising something even bigger with collaboration with other agencies and assistance from the Sarawak government.
“We want to draw the outside world (to Matang Camp) in terms of tourism, activities and other things probably akin to Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF)—it is heard globally, so we would like to develop from that sort of idea,” he told reporters during the event held at the campsite near Kubah National Park today.
The event also received support from the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak (MYSED).
Mawan further said despite its abandoned-looking area, the Matang Camp was the first BIMP-EAGA (Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area) Jamboree which attracted more than 6,000 participants from 12 countries.
The campsite also bears the significance of being the site chosen by a film production company in the 1980s as one of the production sites for the film ‘Farewell to the King’.
“Over a period of time, it (campsite) dipped into a sort of inactivity, so the grass and trees have started to grow (high), and people seem to probably lose touch with the place.
“However, we have come to a point in which very soon you will see something cropping up here to fulfil our dreams and the people’s expectations,” he added.
Also present were the Chief Scout Commissioner of Sarawak, Capt Zainuddin Hamdan and SSC deputy president Datuk Mohamad Safri Abdillah. — DayakDaily
