KUCHING, Feb 11: Ninety housing units under Samariang Avenue slated for completion by November this year will be installed with the Smart Home Device System commercialised by Centre of Technical Excellence Sarawak (Centexs) Commercial.

The 90 housing units make up the first phase of Samariang Avenue, a housing project developed by Hornbill Network Consortium Sdn Bhd located at Jalan Sultan Tengah.

Despite its schedule to be complete by this year, the smart homes will only be delivered to owners by November next year following various procedures such as the approval of the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU).

There will be 652 Samariang Avenue housing units in total, of which all of them will be equipped with the smart system and expected to be completed in the next six or seven years.

Following this, Centexs Commercial had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hornbill Network Consortium Sdn Bhd to mark the first smart home concept housing development project in Malaysia in a simple ceremony held at Centexs Rampangi today.

Centexs Commercial was represented by its general manager Shahren Yusri while Hornbill Network Consortium Sdn Bhd was represented by its chief executive officer (CEO) and managing director Hanizam Hashim.

Present to witness the MoU exchange ceremony was Sarawak Secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani, also chairman of Centexs.

Also present were Sarawak Housing and Real Estate Developers’ Association (Sheda) Kuching Branch chairman Datuk Sim Kiang Chiok, and Centexs chief executive officer (CEO) Syeed Mohd Hussien.

According to Morshidi, the smart system was one of the many Centexs’ efforts to support the Sarawak government’s policy in developing the digital economy and, therefore, enable Sarawak to achieve the status of a developed State by 2030.

He also called on more private housing developers to come forward and take up such initiatives to provide quality smart homes to help the businesses and reduce cost and create efficiency.

“We look forward to Sheda’s assistance in promoting the idea of affordable smart homes to its members.

“Smart homes are not expensive considering its benefits where you can use voice command to interact with the smart device and instruct it to turn on the television or switch off the lights, for instance.

“You can also do all these remotely by using your mobile phone provided that it has Internet connection,” he said at a press conference after the event.

For the record, the idea to commercialise the Smart Home Device System started from implementing the Smart Building Automation training programme offered by Centexs under the Digital Academy.

This means that every student who participated in this programme was given practical exposure to create the system commercialised by Centexs Commercial in line with the aspirations of the Sarawak Government towards a digital economy.
