KUCHING, July 12: The police have arrested eight foreigners after raiding a suspected gambling call centre in Stutong yesterday.
Kuching district police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said the police, with the help of a gambling expert, conducted the raid under ‘Op Dadu’ to detain the six men and two women operating at the call centre.
“These operators would call customers as a way to promote online gambling. In addition to the phone calls, these operators promote online gambling using social media apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram, WeChat and Facebook,” he said in a statement today.
Ahsmon said that upon preliminary investigations, the police found the syndicate had been in operation for the past several months based on their records and transactions.
He revealed that the call centre operates 24-hours, where the workers will work in groups of four during each 12 hour shift.
The police also seized various equipment, including five computer monitor units, five computer processing units, five cell phones, three modems and other equipment used to carry out such activities.
The operation is believed to have brought in approximately RM450,000.
He said that an investigation paper to facilitate the case has been opened under Section 4(1)(g) of The Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 which carries a fine of not less than RM5,000 and not more than RM50,000 and imprisonment for not more than three years.
“All the suspects are remanded for 14 days starting July 13 to 27. An investigation paper will be referred to the Sarawak State Prosecutor to obtain the charge instructions,” he said. — DayakDaily
