MARUDI, Sept 17: Eight victims from a single family, including two senior citizens and four children, were evacuated from Hulu Kampung Padang Kerbau after floods inundated the area today.
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Marudi received the distress call at 12.16pm, prompting the deployment of a four-member operation team along with a Kevlar boat.
The team left the station in a 4WD vehicle and had to wade through floodwaters before reaching the jetty.
From there, they travelled upstream using the Kevlar boat but were forced to wait by the riverbank as the vessel could not enter the victims’ residential area.
The stranded family members used small boats to reach the Kevlar boat, where firefighters assisted them onboard and ensured they were fitted with life jackets.
The group was then transported downstream to Marudi, with a stop at the Sarawak Rivers Board jetty.
All victims were later taken by utility vehicle to the temporary flood evacuation centre at Marudi Civic Centre for shelter and assistance. — DayakDaily
